Stomatal Study of Introduced Species, Ligustrum lucidum Aiton (Oleaceae), in Coastal Areas of Japan

Alien, introduced, and non-native species expand their distribution through the development of various transportation networks. In Japan, Ligustrum lucidum Aiton (Oleaceae) was introduced in mid-1800s for use as roadside trees, but has escaped from planting area spread everywhere. This also invades coastal areas adapted to develop its characteristic features under stress conditions. To clarify adaptive L. areas, we conducted morphological anatomical analyses. We found that stomatal size smaller populations than inland populations, which is similar adaptation pattern japonicum Thunb., a closely related native species. Our results suggest strong selective pressure on conditions could force leaves avoid excessive transpiration, such an areas.
